USERNAME NOT DISPLAYED AT LOGON SCREEN


Error Description:
When the user presses Ctrl, Alt, Del their username is not populated in the log on box.


Cause of Error:
The interactive logon option in the local policies for the machine are not set correctly.

Fix / Solution:
Click Start and select Run.


Type in “gpedit.msc” and click “OK”.


Navigate to:Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options. Find the “Interactive logon: Do not display last user name” option, right click on it and select “Properties”.


In the dialog box that is displayed select “Disabled”.

Error Description:

When a user tries to log onto Windows XP and gets an error that they cannot log on as the Security Log is full.


Cause of Error:
The Security Log in Event Viewer is full.


Fix / Solution
:

Log onto the computer as an administrator and open the “Control Panel”.



Double click on “Administrative Tools”



Double click on “Event Viewer”.



Right click on “Security” and select “Properties”.



On the “General” tab click the radio button for “Overwrite events older than” and set to seven days. Click the “Clear Log” button. Then click “OK”.



Log of as the administrator and test with users logon.

INTERNET EXPLORER NOT OPENING LINKS IN A NEW WINDOW ERROR DOCUMENT

Error: When a user clicks on a link on a web page and either nothing happens or a blank page opens.


Error Description:
Nothing happens or a blank window opens when a link is clicked on a web page.

Cause of Error:
Dll files have not been registered properly.


Fix / Solution:
The dll files need to be registered in the computers Registry.

On the users machine open a Command Prompt.

Click Start and select Run.



Type in cmd and click “OK”



In the Command Prompt that has opened change the directory to C: then type in the following commands.



Regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
Regsvr32 mshtml.dll
Regsvr32 browseui.dll
Regsvr32 shell32.dll

After every command typed in a small dialog box will appear. Click “OK”



Once you have registered the dll files then try Internet Explorer again.

this resolution works for all Microsoft products, I am using Microsoft word for the demonstration.

Resolution:
On the users machine open a Command Prompt.

Click Start and select Run.




Type in cmd and click “OK”




In the Command Prompt that has opened change the directory to C:
then type in the following commands.

cd program files
cd Microsoft office

cd office11

Winword.exe –a


(Note: The “office 11” folder may need to be changed depending on the version of Microsoft Office that is installed).



Then press Enter and Word will open with the toolbars displayed.
